Secrets of the Pyramids!

“It is said, that when one has mastered all of the secrets – the number of unique designs possible, is as the stars in the sky…”

-Sobek (Ancient Egyptian handmaiden to the Queen)

If you love to crochet, but hate to interpret pattern language – Secrets of the Pyramids begins your adventure into a new world of freed creativity. The focus is on particular techniques, which unlock various geometric shapes. A truly unlimited variety of projects is created by combining the geometric shapes into…well, ANYTHING you can imagine!

This series is aimed at the discouraged crocheter, confused and irritated by all the “rules” – i.e., precision in stitch counts, symmetry, swatching, blocking, ripping out work that isn’t perfect, etc.

The subversive heart of Secrets knows that all of that can be tossed aside – and beautiful art is still attainable, perhaps even more so!

Drawing from the visions of over three hundred and fifty 3-D and 2-D artists worldwide, as well as contributions from talented voice artists set to fourteen inspiring songs – “Secrets” depicts Ancient Egypt as it was (or might have been), in celebration of this fabulous culture.

Then, Begin with Secrets – Segment 1, Isosceles

Sobek begins your journey on a search for the mystery of the triangular form. As she puts it, “I am not tutored by the gods as the royals are”, but “I will share all that I know with you.” With the help of her friend the Scribe, the basic Isosceles triangle is explored in crochet and its secrets – variations, decoration, and just a tiny sample of its potential uses in design – are examined in Segment 1.

Secrets – Segment 2, The Right Triangle

Queen Nefertari begins your search for the secrets of the Right triangle. With the help of the Scribe and the mysterious Ramses (“The Golden Man”), a great many secrets are revealed throughout Segment 2. As a member of the Royal Family, the Queen is entitled to know the secrets…but has she really studied them? Her younger sister Neferhotep has made it her life’s work and knows a great deal more – as Queen Nefertari will reluctantly admit.

Segment 2-1: Right triangle and variations, the back-loop technique, stripes (horizontal/vertical), and yarn-rimming with rounded corners.

Secrets – Segment 3, The Equilateral Triangle

To begin Segment 3, Princess Neferhotep recounts the story of a strange childhood – of having been designated by the Oracle to become the repository of the Secrets, and then sent away at a young age to live with the “strangers” for training. In time, she states that she did learn many valuable secrets. With the help of the “Golden Man” Ramses, the secrets of the Equilateral triangle (and the “sharp points” required to make it) are explored in detail. But, she asks, are there secrets that perhaps can never be known?

Segment 3-1: The Sharp-Points Technique (for all angles). Wings and sharp-point rims and partial rims.

Segments 4 and 5 – Fall 2017 and Spring 2018

In Segment 4, the Pharaoh Seti is irritated by such open-ended questions. “There are no Secrets that cannot be known” he states flatly, as his impatience with those who question his omnipotence is clear. Pharaoh Seti is more concerned with providing structure and stability, which has always been his royal role and duty. His contribution to sharing the Secrets is several means of constructing projects, using the triangles along with additional helpful items that he supplies instruction for. Does he really know everything, though? At the end of Segment 4, the appearance of Bastet The Cat Goddess throws it all into question.
