Lacy Birthstone Scarves

Harkening back to Victorian times, each of the scarves is a modern-day interpretation of actual antique patterns as found in magazines of that time. Perhaps your great-great-grandmother was familiar with these techniques! We offer the scarves in honor of their work, and to showcase their skills as reflected in these beautiful heritage items.

January – Garnet

The garnet is a lovely gemstone which ranges in color from a deep burgundy red to pink. This gemstone scarf is mainly done with a filet crochet pattern, in which certain squares are filled in and others are empty. The pattern continues onto the borders of the scarf, where shortening each successive row creates a flowery effect.

February – Amethyst

The amethyst crystal ranges from the darkest purple to a light lilac color. This gemstone scarf (after the first 4 rows) is a four-row repeat, a fun and lively pattern. At the end, two halves are joined and then a ruffled burst is added around the entire rim. Warm and beautiful!

The aquamarine is cool and clear, like water. This gemstone scarf has an interesting V-formation, assembled of three pieces, with the main detail area on the back. Our version has a hanging bezel gemstone at the back’s point, but of course you may place gems where you wish!

June – Pearl

The pearl is smooth and lustrous, while opaque – a perfect complement to so many outfits. This birthstone scarf is made in one piece and works up amazingly fast, due to its light and lacy cluster pattern. At end, the frilled edging is added around the edge.

August – Peridot

The peridot is a sparkling brilliant chartreuse, a reminder of late-summer foliage tending toward gold. This birthstone scarf has a central flower motif on the back, with a easy-to-do leaf pattern extending to the front – which naturally creates a scalloped border.

September – Sapphire

The sapphire is a royal blue, and this birthstone scarf plays off that association with a rim of simple crowns around the edge of the two main pieces. After joining these two, the ends are capped off with two more elaborate crowns- which in the finished scarf, rest softly against the collar.

October – Opal

The opal is both fiery and creamy opaque at the same time. This birthstone scarf features two simple variations on the same square motif, assembled in a unique way. Though opals are of many colors, we chose a soft pink to set off this unique stone – but this scarf would be just as lovely in another color as you prefer.

November – Topaz

The topaz ranges from a deep gold to a smoky orange hue. This birthstone scarf has a Jazz-Age influence and is extra fun to make, with its increasing-and-decreasing stitches – and is very interesting to look at, whether made as long, short, narrow or wide.

December – Blue Zircon

The blue zircon recalls the chill of winter, yet seems warm and inviting. This birthstone scarf is perhaps the most challenging of all the patterns- but fun to do, with its connected pointed crescents made in one long panel. The simple pointed border is a great finish!
